Mozilla Was Born Twenty Years Ago

April 1, 2018 · 06:46

Don Melton:

Twenty years ago today the Mozilla project was born. I am honored to have been one of the midwives for that event. My congratulations to the team! You can even watch us live through the full birthing in “Code Rush”. Proof that we didn’t drop the baby. :)

19 years later, Don, no longer a midwife for Mozilla, but now the father of Safari, helped debug my this site’s CSS (with Maciej Stachowiak).

I still haven’t sent him that bottle that I promised. I really need to rectify that. I will however watch the documentary he linked to first.

Westworld Rewind Podcast — Quick Thoughts →

February 10, 2018 · 13:40

I just finished listening to the first two episodes of Westworld Rewind, hosted by Kelly Guimont and Don Melton, and since Don asked for some feedback, here it is:

  • Please don’t put a timer on the episodes. I can listen to you guys talk all day long.
  • I might have welled up inside towards the end of the first episode by just realising there’ll be at least nine more episodes to listen to.
  • Everyone who has watched Westworld needs to listen to this.

Thanks guys! ❤

This is a test post; please disregard this unless you are Don Melton

Mobile Safari seems to have an issue with my CSS. Quite frankly, it’s probably an issue with my CSS, not Safari, but I’m too stupid to find the solution.

Hello Don. It’s simply amazing to be halfway around the world and have a conversation with the guy who created Safari transcodes stuff.

I just added this paragraph, with a grey background, and a link, just to make it easier to test.

The paragraph above should have the same font size as the others. It doesn’t on iPhone’s Mobile Safari. Fine on iPad and in desktop Safari, in the responsive design tool.

David Silverman Interviews Don Melton →

David Silverman:

…nobody my age ever gets trapped on a desert island. They either crash into one and die, or they have “people” to take care of that and other little annoyances. I’m far too boring and cautious to ever go anywhere near a desert island anyway. And I’m fine with that.

Rebooted Like a Fucking PC →

December 7, 2015 · 10:07

Don Melton:

The plan was to fix the short circuit in my heart by resetting it with a strong jolt of electricity. So strong, in fact, that I would need to be briefly put under to prevent trauma. Apparently it hurts. A lot.

By this time I’d had so many needles jabbed into me and so much hair peeled away by multiple ECG sensors, that strapping me to a work bench and rebooting me like a fucking Windows PC didn’t seem all that strange or unpleasant.

And it wasn’t. I don’t remember a thing.

Glad he’s OK. Hope to meet him someday and talk about transcoding.

Why They Call Him ‘Gramps’ →

Don Melton:

I explained that I was christened as such when I was only in my mid-thirties at Netscape, “Years ago when I got that name, I was actually young enough for it to be ironic. These days it’s a Human Resources policy violation.”

Great story, including Craig Federighi and Tim Cook. You have to read this.

More Stories and Adventures About the Fruit Company →

Don Melton:

So, I’ll make an attempt to get back to it. You know, the typing. And, yes, tell some more of those stories you all like about the Fruit Company and my other technology adventures.

Don’s in my must read section of my RSS reader, which I check daily — really happy that he’ll get back to writing more. You should follow him.
