iOS 10.3.1 — IPSW Direct Download Links
Apple released iOS 10.3.1 yesterday. Please make sure to upgrade as soon as possible, as this release fixes a nasty bug where an attacker could potentially inject code into your Wi-Fi chip if he or she is in range of your device.
iOS 10.3 — IPSW Direct Download Links
iOS 10.3 is out. It introduces APFS and I strongly suggest making both an iTunes and iCloud backup, just to be safe. You can find all the new things, including finding your AirPods, here.
iOS 10.2.1 — IPSW Direct Download Links
iOS 10.2.1 is contains a few security patches, which means you should install this one as soon as possible.
Received My Replacement iPhone 7 Plus From Apple;
Battery Life Is Now Greatly Improved
A month or so ago, I wrote a post in desperation. It was about my iPhone 7 Plus — something was wrong with it, but Apple diagnostics did not unearth and problems, hence Support did not want to provide me with a replacement unit. I tried everything, from spending multiple hours on the phone with Apple Support, to escalating the issue, to calling Apple Support in other countries — all to no avail. I finally wrote a very long email to Tim Cook and Phil Schiller…
iPhone 7 Plus and iOS 10 Battery Life Is Terrible; Apple Support Giving Me the Runaround
I’m finally fed up. My iPhone 7 Plus, because of it’s abysmal battery life, is now officially the worst phone I have ever owned. I’m an iPhone-user since 2008. Since then I’ve had the 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6, 6 Plus, 6S Plus, and now 7 Plus. I recall that I once had issues with battery life on one of the older models, but it wasn’t anything dramatic and a subsequent iOS update fixed the problem. This cannot be said about the 7 Plus. In addition, Apple Support is basically telling me that I’m on my own.
rdar://28350774 – Cannot Copy Text From PDF in Mail.app and Paste to Messages.app
I filed a bug today about PDFs, Mail, and Messages:
Text copied from PDFs attached to mail messages cannot be pasted into Messages (both SMS and iMessage).
1. Open Mail.
2. Download & open PDF attached to email.
3. Select & copy text from PDF.
4. Try to paste text into new or existing Message (iMessage or SMS) — no paste prompt after tapping the text field. After tapping the text field, a “paste” popup should appear.
Nothing happens after tapping the empty text field.
If you’re reading this and know someone who could push this forward, I’d be very grateful.
iOS 10, watchOS 3 and tvOS 10 Is Out
Apple released iOS 10, watchOS 3 and tvOS 10 about 20 minutes ago or so. The build is the same as the dev and public GM so if you’re on either of those, you do not need to (or can) update.
Please remember to do a full iTunes backup before updating though — add a password so that you also backup your Health data, as well as your passwords and remembered Wi-Fi networks.
Apple’s Statement on Why the iOS 10 Kernel Cache Is Unencrypted →
Rene Ritchie:
Apple has provided iMore with the following statement:
“The kernel cache doesn’t contain any user info,” an Apple spokesperson told iMore, “and by unencrypting it we’re able to optimize the operating system’s performance without compromising security.”
iOS 10 Beta Released With Unencrypted Kernel →
Tom Simonite:
Why Apple has suddenly opened up its code is unclear. One hypothesis in the security community is that, as Levin puts it, someone inside the company “screwed up royally.” But he and Solnik both say there are reasons to think it may have been intentional. Encouraging more people to pore over the code could result in more bugs being disclosed to Apple so that it can fix them.
Jonathan Zdziarski, another iOS security expert, favors that hypothesis, because accidentally forgetting to encrypt the kernel would be such an elementary mistake. “This would have been an incredibly glaring oversight, like forgetting to put doors on an elevator,” he says.
Quick Thoughts on iOS 10, macOS Sierra, tvOS 10,
and watchOS 3 from WWDC 2016
I’ve been thinking about what Apple showed us at this year’s WWDC 2016, and I can’t help but be satisfied with what they presented. iOS and macOS seems to have finally been accepted as mature operating systems, and I haven’t seem much criticism, nor any ‘Apple is doomed’ stories.
